Apple is currently rebranding the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and modifications are underway within the Apple Maps application. Upon searching for the Gulf of Mexico in the Maps app, either the original name appears or it’s left blank. However, when you tap on that region, the label «Gulf of America» will be displayed instead.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is implementing a change to its Maps service across the United States starting today. This adjustment means that the map names should be updated for most U.S. users shortly. On a global scale, Apple intends to make this name change applicable to all users in due time.

This week, as promised by Google, they’ve updated their mapping system. Now, you can see «Gulf of America» clearly displayed on Google Maps and Waze.

Google and Apple draw information about global location names from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which made an update this week by adopting the new name «Gulf of America.

Google has shared that Maps users residing in the U.S. will encounter «Gulf of America» instead of «Gulf of Mexico,» whereas users based in Mexico will still view it as Gulf of Mexico. Internationally, the water body between Mexico and Florida will maintain its name as Gulf of Mexico, with Gulf of America displayed in brackets beneath. Apple may choose to implement similar adjustments beyond U.S. borders.

Upon assuming office on January 20, President Donald Trump made it one of his initial decisions to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. However, other nations do not use this nomenclature for the region and are under no obligation to adopt the United States’ name change.

Trump announced that the Alaskan mountain known as Denali would now be called Mt. McKinley, but as of now, neither Google Maps nor Apple Maps have updated their maps to reflect this new name.
